And a birthday party!
We celebrated my oldest son's 6th birthday along with two of his cousins over the Labor Day weekend. After the party, we drove up to the mountains for a quick getaway, and I'm so glad that we did! If you question what there is to do with kids up in the mountains, I'm here to tell you that there is plenty. It does depend on the time of year and where you are located, but for the most part you can do the same things. Make some plans for next spring and summer to take on some of the fun "to do's" in my list.
1. Swim
Where we stay in Ellijay, Ga, we have access to an indoor and outdoor pool. We took advantage of the final sunny days of summer with some fun at the outdoor pool after going tubing down the river! If you don't have access to a pool where you are staying, look up local community swimming pools. There is one being built right now for the community of Ellijay.
2. Tube
There are tons of places that you can go to for tubing down the river. Typically, they provide you with a tube, drop you off and pick you up at the end. Where we stay with the kids, we just put in our tubes about 30 minutes ahead of the outdoor pool. That's as far as we have gone with the kids. My oldest is not a fan of tubing. I made him go with me last year, and he was trying not to cry. I was getting frustrated. Then, he saw a snake coming at us, and that was the end of that... I haven't pushed him on the subject since. My middle and my youngest though, they absolutely love it.
3. Visit a Farm
We spent two afternoons at Mountain Valley Farm to visit the animals, eat ice cream and buy fresh cheese, butter and crackers. They raise cows, pigs and lambs on the farm and sell the meat as well. Everything was spectacular. I highly recommend a visit specifically for the cherry and goat cheese ice cream.
4. Find a Creek
Having boys is truly so much fun. We are constantly filthy. So to find ourselves in a creek, where we can wash off all the mud seems like the most perfect spot for us.
We drove around the mountain to find the best spot to get our feet in the water. The first place we stopped at was fun for the boys to get used to the idea it was okay to get dirty. The second spot we stopped at was much wider, and there were plenty of smooth rocks to collect and fallen trees to climb. Sometimes, all you need is the outdoors to entertain the kids.
If you are planning a trip to the mountains with the kids next spring or summer, don't be afraid to get outside, get a little dirty and wash off in the creek!
