Country Fall Fun: Part Two

Plus some fall gardening tips!

I finally added the top to the tunnel greenhouse, and it has worked wonderfully. I set up the sprinkler inside the tunnel and aimed it high so that it will rain down all over the plants. So far, I have lettuce, collard greens, kale and Swiss chard in there. I intend to add more throughout the winter. We will see how progress goes. In the meantime, I have started on another mound bed (not inside the tunnel) that is smaller than the first. I have added sticks and dead leaves so far, and I will continue to add more along with dirt until next spring. My intentions are to plant a few pepper plants there. I'm thinking of starting all of my vegetables from seed in the greenhouse tunnel before spring next year too. I want to get as much use out of this tunnel as I can.

A lot of the second half of our October was spent in the garden due to making sure the tunnel was working properly. We are making plans to expand the garden, but I want to make sure that I am utilizing the space I have right now to the maximum. For instance, we (Matt) dug up the blueberry bush from the front yard and replanted it beside the chicken coop. The boys like to "help" with the yard work when they can, as you can see in our video. When we expand the garden in the future, the new location of the blueberry bush will be fenced in as well. I know the boys will have their hands in that work too. Other than gardening and taking care of the chickens, we have spent tons of time outside on the trampoline and in the yard. We've grilled out while watching football and had cousins over riding the kids' toys and playing in the woods.

One cute craft the boys and I did this past month was pick pine cones and decorate them like little creatures. You can literally use anything to make these. We kept it very simple with some pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, glue and googly eyes. It was just something fun and creative. It involved a little outside time to find the pine cones, and it dedicated some time to arts and crafts, which is always a plus in my book.

Of course, we spent the end of our October just like everyone else by trick or treating. We went to downtown Covington and rode in my parents' old Volkswagen van to stop at all of the houses. It was a really chilly night, but we had so much fun seeing all of the decorations and collecting candy. We even went through one of the back yards all decked out for a spooky experience. The boys loved it, and so did we. I'm so glad we live in such a fun town with plenty to do with the kids. Watch our video to see the boys all decked out and all the Halloween fun!
